Starting a Biddy Basketball League
Biddy Basketball suggests the following:
(**Note): It is important to establish a solid volunteer and/or paid employee base to help coach your teams and help run and mantain the program.
- The first thing you will want to do is organize and advertise for a Biddy Basketball League registration and clinic. Registration should begin two or three weeks before your clinic. In your advertisement you should state the following: Boys, Girls, or both and for what age groups. The Biddy Basketball age groups are the following: Boys & Girls 7&8, 9&10, 11&12, and 13&14 year olds. Ages are determined and governed by rule 0.01 on page (5) five in the Biddy Basketball Rule Book.
- Once participates have signed up for the clinic you should divide the youngsters into teams with (8) eight players per team. With the number of teams that will be participating you will be able to determine and finalize your bracket.
- At the completion of the clinic, it is advised that you furnish your participants with a t-shirt or any other means of memorabilia for completing the clinic. Registration should continue for the next couple of days until player evaluations begin. Player evaluation practices allow coaches to determine the talent of each youngster. Evaluations can last two to three days depending on availability of your facilities.
- Once your Biddy Basketball evaluations have ended and youngsters have been divided into age groups, we suggest hosting a draft in order to evenly distribute players into official Biddy teams. (Example: you have 50 youngsters that signed up for your (8) eight year old boys classification. You would make (6) six teams each consisting of (8) eight players per team, with a couple of extras on other teams. Begin with Coach #1 and have him choose a youngster first and so on until you reach Coach #6. Then, the next round will begin with Coach #6 selecting first and so on until you reach Coach #1. Continue rotating untill all youngsters have been selected.)
- Biddy Basketball rules state that each team must play a minimum of (9) nine games. This may or may not include a post season tournament. Once local leagues have concluded, it will be time to determine Special Teams.
- Special Teams are determined by the following: Each coach will evaluate and choose (10) ten players from all the other teams, not including their own team, to try out for the Special Team. Coaches for Special Teams should be determined by the Director of the program. Coaches should be selected based upon a written and established criteria: The selected has the experience and knowledge to coach the Special Team as well as the time to do so.
- Once the Special Teams are determined you can don one of the following: You may create a Regional play tournament for your Special Teams to compete against other Special Teams in or around your city or state and the winner of that Regional Tournament will advance to the International Tournament. Or, if Regional play is unavailable to your are you will be automatically eligible to participate in the International Tournament.
Please call the National Biddy Basketball office for any unanswered questions and/or for further assistance.
To have a successful league the above will help, but it is not sufficient. It is most important to maintain balance within your league. To do so you should establish rules that allow for each player to develop his or her talent. For example: setting stipulations on play time (each youngster should play at least one full quarter or one half). Having a balanced league is not only beneficial for the youngsters, but it also attracts support for your league from the parents.
It is important to note that the Biddy Basketball Rule Book is mandatory for tournament competition only. Local league have the opportunity to establish their own local league rules. |
